Following is an edited digest of responses to my question about good Chinese food in the area. Thanks to all who contributed.

###

I recommend "Wings" on Jackson ave. Our family has been dining there for years. They deliver too. Great prices, great food.

###

Wings' at 4th and Jackson has been a fav of mine for chineese for decades! I think they might even deliver..

###

Don't know about Lai Lai, but we eat at Botown several times a month. They are on the corner of 2nd and San Salvador.

###

in the downtown area that I've tried (Bo Town, Lai Lai, and that one in the cellar on First near O. Joe's) are fairly awful. Good luck.

###

Hunan Taste - on 4th just north of Hedding - is great.

###

Hunan Taste is very good. Its the one on 4th. Try the chicken salad, and the meat pie. Almost every dish we have ordered has been very tasty.

###

There is a dearth of good Chinese restaurants around here, but there are a couple. If you like spicy Chinese food there is Hunan Taste on N 4th St. (998 N 4th) near the bowling alley. Its a mom & pop restaurant where the people are very nice, and the food is very good. I believe the owner used to work at the famous Hunan in San Francisco. They do take out.

###

There is also a new asian mall on Story and McClaughlin. There is a big Hong Kong style restaurant (similar to the Mayflower in Milpitas, though the quality is not quite up to the Mayflower standards) there. They do dim sum on weekend mornings, but if you plan to do dim sum get there by 10am or you'll wait a while. I've never tried to get takeout there since its a huge place and it seems a little silly asking the waiter in a dinner jacket for little take out boxes. If you just want Chinese BBQ there is that place on Santa Clara and 11th. Beyond that I would start driving to some of the Asian malls on Tully or Brokaw. The other Chinese restaurants

I forgot to mention that the best Chinese food we've found in the South Bay is Mandarin House on Winchester, a few doors north of the Century Theaters. The owner is a professionally trained chef, and the food, presentations, and variety, are excellent.

###

World class Chinese in Willow Glen: Taiwan, between Minnesota and Willow on Lincoln east side of the street.

###

Also, the Taiwan Restaurant on Lincoln Ave. in Willow Glen is very good as well.

###

Maybe not the answer you want, but if you want awesome chinese food, hop on 880 and go to the ranch-99 center in milpitas. please let me know if you find anything of that quality down here. Also, 3-6-9 in fremont is good.
