Thank you to the many neighbors who replied. Here is the list. Almost all of the recommendations were given only once. The only names to appear twice are Adobe Animal Hospital in Los Altos, and Mayfair Veterinary Hospital on Alum Rock Rd. No individual veterinarian was mentioned more than once.

Dr Runyan at the Burbank Pet Hospital is great. 408-271-7875

I had a Golden Retriever w/epilepsy and now have a Chow with severe arthritis. I used to have a great vet named Dr. Jett, but now I use Dr. Bannermann at Central Animal Hospital. She's a great vet for dogs. I can't speak for cats.

It's a haul, but we use Serra Vet. Hospital in Sunnyvale. They take good care of Shasta, our cat, who has slashed more than her share of Vet Assistants.

We go to the Animal Clinic, 45 Cronin Drive Santa Clara, CA 95051-6719, 408-241-8200. The veterinarian is Dr. Skaife. Contrary to the name, this is a personal veterinarian's office. It is not a "drop-in" clinic with many vets. It is a little bit out of our way, but we go there because of Dr. Skaife. He is very kind and gentle with our animals and you can tell that he genuinely loves animals. He charges a little bit more than other places might, but it is worth it to us to have the extra bit of care. He takes his time with each animal and will explain at length what is happening to your animal in layman's terms. When you bring your pet into the examining room, he will take time to let the pet get to know him. He will offer the pet some treats, and sooth the pet until the pet is comfortable. If there is a treatment regimen you must go through, he will explain it to you and "train" you to do it. Highly recommended.

Adobe Animal Hospital in Los Altos. A 20 minute drive, but well worth the distance. Recommed Dr. Berg (retired in 2003). He's our favorite, but all other Dr's we have seen have been good.

We take Bink and Chelsea to the VCA Crocker Animal Hospital over on Jackson St. Drs Shen and Look take good care of our doggies.

Dr. Apple, he comes to your house!

We go to Lincoln Ave Pet Clinic and have for several years. Phone #293-3448 Address 699 Lincoln Ave SJ.

Highly recommend Dr. Miller and the staff at Mayfair Veterinary on Alum Rock, about 3 miles from here. One of the nation's leading dog handlers/agility trainers recommended them. If you go there, be sure to let them know that Saba, Nellie and I referred you to them.

Almaden South Pet Clinic - 927-0211 worth the drive. Campbell Pet Clinic - Alternative Holistic Pet Care - does not do "regular" vet care & shots. If you have a pet with cancer or other non-curable disease - Walt McCall can help

Extra: a great Dog Kennel is Heritage Kennel 432-2350

I recently tried Evergreen Veternarian Clinic at Capitol & 101. Very nice, young Vet. Inexpensive.

Adobe Animal Hospital in Los Altos. We love the tlc that our animals (2 dogs) get there, and the staff seems very caring towards all of the animals. We've taken our dogs there for check-ups, shots, minor surgery (dog jumped through plate glass window) and major surgery (dog swallowed rock which got stuck in small intestine--ugh!) We also tried Miramonte Veterinary Hospital in Mtn. View after our original vet retired, but we were not impressed.

We have been using Dr. Linda Manley for our dogs and cat for around 15 years, following her to Camden Animal Hospital, and then Central Animal Hospital. She has just (this month) purchased the Mayfair Veterinary Hospital at 2810 Alum Rock Avenue, Phone 408-258-2735. We recommend her and hope neighbors will check out her new practice.

We take Harry (our feline king-of-the-house) to Hemingway Cat Hospital in Saratoga (408.741.4844). They only handle cats, & aren't cheap. But then again, they only handle cats, so they know their stuff.
